The illustrious history of the University of Houston-Downtown, Sigma Lambda Gamma, Alpha Delta Chapter began in the fall semester of 2005 with three women by the name of Elizabeth Castillo, Lydia Lopez, and Maritza Pletz. These women had never met before and did not know of each other, but they had one goal in common; to bring SLG to UHD campus. The three women individually brought up the idea of expansion to two University of Houston Chi Alpha Chapter sisters: Clarisa “Consentida” Estrada #41 and Leslivett “Radiante” Garcia #89. It was then that the Chi Alpha sisters made them aware of the existence of each other and thus guided the three women to request an expansion packet from the national website. The three women made contact with each other and proceeded to have their first meeting where they began to brainstorm ideas on how to bring SLG to the UHD campus.
The first step to establishing a Sigma Lambda Gamma Chapter at UHD was to create a stronger interest group. Thus the three women worked together to aggressively spread the word on campus and actively recruit motivated ladies for the interest group. Two interest meetings were held with the assistance of the University of Houston’s Chi Alpha Chapter, Texas Southern Colony (Rho Gamma Chapter) along with the help of sister Sabrina “Atrevida” Tolentino #78 from University of Texas in Austin Xi Chapter. The first interest meeting was where future founding sister Diana “Amirah” Flores #4 attended.
In the fall semester of 2005, Elizabeth Castillo, Jackie Lopez and Lydia Lopez brainstormed ideas on naming the interest group. Lydia Lopez and Maritza Pletz finally decided on the name R.E.I.N.A.S which stood for Respectful, Exceptional, Intelligent, Natural, Admirable, Sisters. In the spring semester of 2006, eight women established the campus recognized organization of R.E.I.N.A.S. The organization presented themselves as an established interest group on the UHD campus for the first time at UHD’s Mardi Gras event. Alongside the organization, stood an extremely influential sister from the University of Texas A&M Lambda Alpha Chapter, Nayeli “Orgullo” Cruz #55 and a tremendously helpful advisor from UHD, Lucy Bowen. R.E.I.N.A.S became quite active in the following year. R.E.I.N.A.S proceeded to adopt the same principles as SLG and gained strength and recognition on campus through their participation in a variety of community service projects in the spring and fall semesters of 2006. In the spring of 2007, R.E.I.N.A.S won Organization of the Year at UHD’s One Main Event. In the year of 2006, there were a number of women who assisted in the founding of UHD’s Sigma Lambda Gamma interest group, but were lost along the way.
The members of R.E.I.N.A.S applied for colony status in spring 2007. In March of 2007, SLG National Headquarters granted the University of Houston-Downtown colony status.
